With the highest possible peer-review rating (AV Preeminent) by Martindale-Hubbell, he has an extensive background navigating legal disputes on behalf of Fortune 100 companies, mid-size and small businesses, and individuals in a wide variety of matters.
As a transactional lawyer, Doug served as outside general counsel to a media company (national television network with radio and TV properties) for over fourteen years. He provided legal oversight of day-to-day program and studio operations, negotiated and implemented operational/production agreements, legal oversight of studio and network operations, including labor/employment agreements and practices. In addition, he served as outside general counsel for an international commercial real estate data analytics and investment-advisory firm, handling substantially all contract negotiations, trademark oversight, and advising the news division concerning defamation and first amendment defense claims.
While maintaining his litigation and transactional practice, Doug now uses his considerable knowledge and experience to serve as a mediator and arbitrator. His litigation and outside general counsel experience provides him with an unparalleled grasp and insight into how a business, employment, civil rights, real estate, or other civil case may appear to a judge, jury, or arbitrator and what it will take to litigate and win – or to reach resolution. Using his mediation, counseling, and facilitation skills, he can break through impasse and settle before litigation or after filing. Doug regularly serves as an arbitrator in mandatory fee arbitration disputes before the Orange County Bar Association.
Doug has keen insight into what drives -- and how to resolve-- highly emotional, contentious disputes. He trained in counseling, he has counseled individuals and couples in a wide variety of relationship, business, and personal issues. He is skilled in resolving emotionally charged disputes and handling difficult persons. He understands why resolution of such charged disputes can be difficult without the help of an experienced mediator. Doug is uniquely equipped to understand and balance the raw emotions, nuances, and dynamics that drive employment and many other highly charged disputes – and is able to help find creative solutions for resolving them without uncertain and costly litigation.
He served as an adjunct professor of law at Trinity Law School, teaching transactional law.
He served for six years in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserve.
Doug is married to his wife Kathy and has three grown children. He is an avid baseball and ice hockey fan. He is a runner and works out regularly at the gym. He has devoted significant time to charitable and church-related activities.
